Judge Joanne Rosado

Service Description

Judge Joanne Rosado was elected by the people of the 11th Subcircuit in the 2018 election. She was originally appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to the bench on January 20, 2017. This appointment was made based on the recommendation of Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis and her screening committee to the vacancy of the Honorable Kathleen G. Kennedy in the 11th Subcircuit. Joanne currently serves in the Juvenile Justice Division hearing felony and misdemeanor cases. She previously sat at First Municipal District, Municipal Division. In that assignment she handles a variety of cases from criminal to civil while sitting in this division. Prior to her service on the bench, Joanne served the community as an Assistant Cook County Public Defender starting in 2002. Judge Joanne Rosado spent over 10 years serving the community at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse, the largest centralized criminal courthouse in the country. During her last years as a Cook County Public Defender, Judge Joanne Rosado practiced in the Multiple Defendant Division, providing legal services to members of the community and their families throughout Cook County for homicide cases. Judge Joanne Rosado tried over 200 bench trials and over 75 jury trials. These cases included First Degree Murder, high profile cases including cases where clients faced Natural Life Sentences, Complex forensic issues, Mental Health matters and all felony related charges. During her service, Judge Joanne Rosado has monitored, provided guidance / assistance and counseling to other Assistant Public Defenders, clerks, social workers, probation officers, medical professionals, investigators, experts, and legal associates. Judge Joanne Rosado has prepared and litigated hundreds of complicated motions. Additionally, Judge Joanne Rosado has civil litigation experience having conducted over 100 bench trials. She has also represented sellers/buyers in real estate transactions, estate planning, contract negotiations, probate matters, guardianships, landowner-tenant matters, employment disputes and non-related court civil matters. For a number of years, Judge Joanne Rosado has been involved with mentor/mentee programs, assisting minority students in law school through the MLER program. She was a regular presenter for the Lawyers in the Classroom program, where attorneys go into Chicago Public Schools and present Mock Trials for students.
